Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the understanding of the relationship between
the worker and specific job function(s), the job as a whole
and the workstation / site where the job is predominantly performed.
It is critical to understand how the worker is performing all job-related
activities and whether or not the methods, equipment, tools and other resources used are negatively impacting the worker. Negative impact usually translates directly to decreased productivity and increased risk for injury. Incorrect or maladaptive work methods will increase the likelihood for work-related injuries. A mismatch can, and usually does cause a work related injury or accident.
Any work-related accident or injury will incur costs to the employer both
direct and indirectly. Cost in terms of lost time, medical care, increase in insurance premiums, and most certainly compromised job satisifaction for the affected team member.
Legal implications are also a consideration in our soceity. Don't be the
employer whose first encounter with an ergonomic evaluation occurs as a reaction to an impending law suit. Utilize ergonomic evaluations as an attempt to form a safe workplace, and in turn should a legal matter result, your proactive measures will stand as a testament to your commitment to a safe environment.
The ergonomic process is completed through a job and work site
evaluation and review of job description information. Video recording of the job and processes thereof are sometimes useful. A written report of all recommendations with cost projections as well as a detailed job analysis are provided. |
